Together, we are making an impact.

The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation is an organization with a simple yet significant mission: to cure cystic fibrosis and to provide all people with CF the opportunity to lead long, fulfilling lives. Contrast & Co. has partnered with the Foundation each of the past few years to craft its annual report. This critical resource is more than a summary or a recap. It’s a reflection. It’s a celebration. And it’s a roadmap for the future. So when the Foundation approached us about developing the 2021 Annual Report, we gladly rose to the occasion. We built the experience around a core visual concept and theme—but the depth and breadth of the resource carry well beyond tangible creative signals to true impact.

The visual identity.

The Foundation has an established brand identity that has served it well over the years—so our aim in this initiative was not to adapt the primary visual signals but to build upon them. We drew from the signature circle shape within the logo, deriving refreshed meaning by creating a custom Newton’s cradle emblem for the experience. It’s a shape that carries rich meaning, valuable flexibility, and above all, a sense of potential—both already realized and yet to be achieved. We reinforced the depth of the experience by incorporating some of the secondary palette in greater proportion, and brought everything together with an anchoring “Heartbeat” accent treatment to highlight individuals living with and thriving despite their diagnosis.

The pillars.

So how is the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation driving meaningful change? By funding research and drug development, partnering with the CF community, and advancing high-quality, specialized care. With these focal priorities front of mind, we anchored the report around three central pillars: Cure, Care, and Community. More than a catchy alliterative device, these core themes drive the overall flow of the report, relate back to the Newton’s cradle visual construct, and above all, create a connective tissue across the piece. Within these categories, we elevated the experience with key messages and stories, striking breakdowns of the most critical metrics and milestones, and a clear foundation for showcasing the Foundation’s aspirations for present and future outcomes.

The executive report.

Ultimately, there’s one basic truth to successfully managing a nonprofit: Buy-in matters, fiscally and figuratively. So we distilled the feature-length report to illuminate the essentials in a corresponding executive summary. A tactical deliverable first and foremost, the summary needed to strike an emotional chord, be instantly understandable, and motivate action. The resulting one-page resource achieves its aims all while adhering to the signature visual and messaging experience for the overarching report. Taken collectively, the experience becomes not merely dimensional, but highly strategic as well.

The extensions.

Last, we focused our attention on empowering the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation with the tools needed to broaden the report’s impact across channels and applications. Swag is a small but mighty vehicle for reinforcing the organization’s point of view. And as the team makes its mark within the digital sphere as well as beyond to physical events and activations, they’re equipped with conceptual designs for everything from t-shirts and water bottles to pins and baseball caps.
