Contrast & Co. is seeking talented and dedicated team members to join our brand strategy and design studio.

Senior Designer.

We are seeking an exceptionally talented senior designer to help our growing brand consultancy + design agency. We are determined to be the leading brand creative agency in the DC area, and the right individual will help us get there. The ideal candidate brings a broad range of design experience, including branding, logo and identities, interactive touchpoints of all sizes, print materials and more. You’ve worked in a creative or agency environment, and have the drive and determination to build something truly wonderful.

So, what does it take to succeed in this role here? Glad you asked.

You must be passionate about design.

Let’s begin with the intangibles. First and foremost, you are hungry. You are pursuing greatness, and will refuse to accept mediocrity in anything that you do. The best designers in the world design because they need to, and that is exactly the person we are determined to find. Quite simply, we want someone who bleeds creativity. Someone who daydreams in pixels, obsesses about kerning, and goes to sleep with fresh ideas still racing through their heads.

You must possess exceptional design talent.

Beyond passion and drive, you must be an exceptionally strong designer. You must possess a full understanding of the principles of design, and the instincts to know when the rules should be trampled. You must understand the nuances of typography, color, contrast, and proportions, and have the ability to consistently weave poetry from perplexity. In short, your work has to be beautiful.

You must be organized and fast.

Next, we need someone who think fast, and works swiftly. Our industry favors the fleet, and we need a designer who brings real speed to the table. Someone with the ability to intuitively understand a creative problem and conceptualize ideas immediately. In order to do that, you must know the tools of the trade. You need true mastery of InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator—not just the basics. You should know features and shortcuts like the back of your hand, and have the ability to punish these programs in ways that Adobe never imagined. Your files and your work must be clean and organized.

You must be comfortable wearing multiple hats.

We’re a very small team, so you have to be comfortable diving headfirst into new challenges. There is no uniform template for the projects we tackle, so we want someone eager to design pretty much anything. On Monday morning, you may be laying out a 36-page design proposal, and by Tuesday, you are skinning a SquareSpace microsite going live that afternoon. There will be days when you may be a strategist, a researcher, a writer, and a designer all in the same meeting. Point is, things change daily here, which is exactly how we like it.

You must have a great attitude.

When it comes to personality, we want a true leader. We want someone who collaborates well in high pressure environments. Someone with the confidence to know when to defend their ideas, but the humility to recognize the strength and perspectives that others can offer. Someone who can effectively mentor young designers, and elevate the others that surround them. There are no details in this position, everything matters — both big and small. This will be one of the important roles within this budding agency, and you must be equipped to handle your responsibilities with grace and poise. You need to be highly detail oriented, responsible and reliable.

Finally, you need to be curious. This industry moves far too quickly for us to ever become complacent. We need someone who is constantly seeking what’s next — someone with a disdain for the status quo, and a thirst for the undiscovered. If you are out there, we just may have the perfect position for you.

For the right individual, this is an incredible opportunity.
